Residents in some parts of Joburg have been without water for over 10 days and there’s no clear indication of when taps will be flowing again.
Rand Water says the reason for the low water supply is that “the city is getting insufficient water supply from rand water.”
In the meantime, Johannesburg Water has provided 18 water tanks to heavily impacted areas around the city.
According to the City of Joburg, their systems “have been struggling to recover from a pump Rand Water’s Eikenhof pump station earlier this week.”
Unlike water-shedding, at least with loadshedding we have candles, battery-operated lights, solar, and generators. “But, how do we navigate water-shedding?” This was the question posed to 959 Breakfast with Dineo Ranaka and Sol Phenduka posed to code switchers on Thursday.
On a positive note, Rand Water managed to repair the air valve that was vandalized on Wednesday. As a result, pumping at the Yeoville resumed just before 8 am on Thursday, and by mid-morning, the water levels were sitting at 5.73m.
The reserve currently has two pumps operating and the water supply to high-lying areas should start improving soon.
“Should there be no planned interruptions to the system overnight, then there should be improved water levels by Friday.”

This is not the first time this has happened. In January this year, some parts of Joburg were without water for over 24 hours as Joburg Water scrambled to recover the Eikenhof system after a power failure.
