Denise Zimba recently joined Kaya 959 breakfast to start the day with the Dineo and Sol Phenduka.
She shared more about her journey in the South African entertainment industry, her career decisions and how she’s evolved over the years.
She spoke about marriage, finding love, life-changing moments, and being part of Generations and Fly Chix.

On finding love
She spoke about the time she met her husband.
“We met through mutual friends, I was going through a really tough time in the industry, and I was kind of protecting energy I did not want to project, that we are black women always complaining about something. I was in a space where I felt my peers weren’t seeing my contributions.”
“I was like if I am going to leave, let people remember me on a high note instead of this angry, frustrated girl…”

On Being a mother
She spoke about how being a mother brought about the biggest change in her life
“No one prepares you for being a parent, being a wife being solely responsible for someone. It was a game changer for me, I feel like my daughter is my biggest universal lesson.”
On Generations and Fly Chix
She also spoke about Fly Chix, an all-girl singing and dancing group that had a docu-reality television series.
The show was produced by Muthaland Entertainment and focused on how the group’s families react to their career choice as well as the challenges that come with the cutthroat nature of the music business.
“On the casting of Generation, there was a lady who worked there called Poppy, after studying musical theatre I kind of went there to audition for different roles and she would always say to me that you are a bit too nervous, it is not reflecting or looking good on tape, but she always encouraged me to come back whenever I would get a call.”
“She said to me one day you are going to come and work here, don’t worry about it. Go on and do your thing, grow up in the industry, experience a little bit more, see a little bit more, find your fabric and more.”
“That’s when I stopped doing castings and started a concept called Fly Chix.”
