The Department of Home Affairs has granted Chris Hani’s killer an exemption which will see him serve out his parole in South Africa.
Janusz Walus who gunned down the SACP leader in 1993, was initially sentenced to death which was then outlawed when apartheid ended in 1994.
As a result Walus’ sentencing was revised to life imprisonment and earlier in November, Chief Justice Raymond Zondo approved his parole after serving 29-years.
Walus who will be returning to society, cannot use any travel document or passport issued by his home country, Poland.
After much backlash and outrage that Hani’s killer gets to walk free, it seems the South African government set some terms for Walus’ parole.
One of which is that he will not serve his parole in Poland.
Aaron Motsoaledi, Home Affairs Minister said Walus must make the most of his parole in the country he committed his heinous crime.
“The letter addressed to Mr Walus, and a certificate of exemption, has been forwarded to the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services to be delivered to Mr Walus.
The letter set out the exceptional circumstances requiring the granting of the exemption which, inter alia, include the fact that it would be in the interests of justice that Mr Walus serves his sentence to the fullest, including parole in the Republic of South Africa.”
