Zanzibar in Tanzania has banned men from plaiting their hair
The braiding of men’s hair has been outlawed by the Tanzanian government.
Omar Adam, executive secretary of the Council of Arts, Film, and Culture in Zanzibar told the Zanzibar Broadcasting Corporation, that men plaiting their hair is unacceptable.
Adam added that this ban is aimed at protecting what it calls Zanzibar’s culture and tradition.
Anyone who violates the ban faces a fine of one million Tanzanian shillings (Ksh. 58,000), [roughly R 400] six months in jail, or both.
“Police will arrest all men who plait hair; this is not acceptable by the arts council, and there is a special permit for plaiting hair, which is Sh1 million, and we have set that price in order to deter them.”
“Now it is your choice to either pay 1 million shillings to plait or buy a razor to shave,” said Adam,

Adam claims that although the law has been around since 2015, it has not yet been put into effect. However, he did not specify whether it had an impact on visitors from other countries.
