South African singer-songwriter Holly Rey, who is Type 1 Diabetic, recently opened up to her followers about her health struggles.
In a heartfelt update, she shared that the past few months have been “incredibly difficult” for her, but she has now reached a point where she feels strong enough to speak about her experience.
Holly hopes that by sharing her story, she could help others who may be going through similar challenges.
“In December, I was hospitalised with severe dehydration to the point where it started affecting my kidneys. My kidney function had dropped really low, and I was hospitalised for about a week. At the time, it seemed to be just severe dehydration and fatigue,” Holly revealed.
She continued, “In January, I was feeling unwell again and was hospitalised once more, this time with renal/kidney failure. My kidney function was so low that there were discussions about dialysis and transplants.”
Holly described this period as a “scary time,” as the root cause of her illness remained unclear.
“I am a fairly well-controlled diabetic, and renal failure in diabetics usually happens later in life. None of this made sense to me,” she explained.
After extensive tests, her medical team determined that she had suffered an acute kidney injury.
“This meant that my body would take a while to recover,” Holly shared, adding that she has been feeling exhausted and unable to engage in many activities.
“I’m not even able to shower by myself because I feel so tired and out of breath,” she admitted.
The singer also experienced high blood pressure, which she was told was linked to her kidney failure.
As part of her ongoing treatment, Holly has now been permanently placed on an insulin pump to help manage her diabetes more effectively.
