Kwazulu-Natal lifeguards have been hailed heroes for braving treacherous waves in a mass rescue over the weekend.
Hide tide and a strong current swept 15 bathers out to sea in Amanzimtoti.
A large crowd at Pipeline beach were brought to a standstill on New Year’s Day after the group of 15 were dragged out to sea by huge waves.
Using rescue boats, the lifeguards struggled to get the distressed beachgoers to safety.
Dangerous conditions made it difficult for people to enjoy a swim in the ocean.
In a video that has circulated widely on social media, people were still making their way into the water, despite the near drowning incident.
While the mass rescue was underway another man was swept into the current. He was saved by a lifeguard on a canoe.
