A KwaZulu-Natal has been arrested after he allegedly choked his nephew to death and buried his body in a shallow grave.
The man allegedly told police he needed the child’s body to protect his house from being bewitched by people.
Provincial SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele, says the 10-year-old’s body was found buried in a shallow grave outside the man’s home in Nyezane.
“Ayabulela Kubheka had been in bed on December 15 while his grandmother went to warm some food. When she came back, she could not find the boy. She alerted the Amangwe police station and a missing person’s case was opened,” says Mbele.
On Christmas Day, the boy’s relative was standing outside when he saw a dog carrying a human leg in its mouth.
Police say the man later saw the dog digging in a yard close by and went to investigate.
“He discovered a shallow grave and called the nearby community members to assist him to dig up the grave. They found the body of Ayabulela and called the police,” she says.

Suspect arrested
The 32-year-old neighbour, who was also a relative, attempted to escape but was apprehended by the community.
The suspect allegedly told the community that he killed the boy by choking him.
“He dug a shallow grave in his yard and buried him. The accused has since appeared in the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court on a charge of murder. He is due back in court next month,” Mbele says.
In a separate matter, a Durban man was set alight after he murdered his ex-girlfriend’s six-year-old son.
Mbele says the man went to the woman’s house in Verulam and they got into an argument.
He then set the woman’s house alight, with the boy still inside. The child died at the scene.
“Days later, residents tracked the suspect down and set him alight. Two cases of murder and arson have been opened at the Verulam SAPS station,” Mbele says.
