A sixth child has died in hospital following an accident involving an inflatable castle, also known as a bouncy castle.
The children were celebrating an end-of-term party in Australia last week when the castle suddenly became airborne.
A gust of wind reportedly swept the castle 30 feet in the air.
Two other children remain in a critical condition in the hospital. A third child is recovering at home.
Tasmania Police identified the child who died on Monday as 11-year-old Chace Harrison.
“Our thoughts continue to be with his family, and the families and loved ones of all the children involved, during what is an incomprehensibly difficult time,” police said in a statement.
Police are investigating how the tragedy occurred.
“Their priority will be to interview all witnesses, gather and analyse forensic evidence and all environmental aspects, including weather patterns and conditions at the time of the incident.”
Bouncy castles, which are sometimes called jumping castles, are also popular in South Africa. They are often used at children’s parties.
The castles have anchor points and anchor pegs to secure them to the ground. Installers also secure them with ropes, stakes, and sandbags.
According to Technical Safety BC, “bouncy castles should be securely anchored to prevent movement by the wind or user activity”.
Parents should make sure they understand all safety requirements before hiring a bouncy castle. An adult should also supervise children at all times.
