Jova Vaccine Supply, a company registered a few day before the first batch of the vaccine’s arrival in South Africa, has caused much commotion on social media. Many presume that the company belongs to well-connected government officials promptly trying to get ahead of a big tender on the horizon.
On Monday, one million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine landed at OR Tambo International Airport from India, before a few samples went to the National Control Laboratory in Bloemfontein.
There have been claims on social media that the company received an upfront payment of R 1,5 million this past Friday, 29thJanuary, ahead of the Presidential Address.
Is the Mpumalanga Premier involved?
The company’s address is in Mpumalanga and speculation that the Premier’s family is directly involved in its formation has rocked social media. The director of a newly registered company, Serati Simon Mashilo, the sole owner of Jova Vaccines Supply, has reportedly denied having any contracts in the province but said he would like to get involved in the rollout.
Mpumalanga Premier Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane who was recent caught in a nationwide fallout for not wearing a mask at Minister Jackson Mthembu’s funeral denied social media claims that her relatives had won a tender for the distribution of Covid-19 vaccines. She claims there are attempts by individuals or a group of individuals to tarnish her image.
