South Africans did not welcome the news of fish paste being removed from store shelves well.
The outcry by adults wishing back times long gone became a reaction many shared.
They united through lists of nostalgic flavours that were once easily available and a delight to eat on fresh bread, toasted sandwiches, crackerbread, and vetkoek.
All of which are now unicorns that can only be sourced online through imports, or that have become a thing of the past.
A few discontinued and hard to find spreads:
- Bovril
- Marmite
- Sandwich Spread
- Redro Fish Spread
- Peck Anchovette (1891 -2022)
However, it may be that not all is lost.
If you’re the type of person who loves trying out new recipes, we have a fish paste recipe that may just satisfy your childhood memory craving.
