A female Johannesburg Metro Police Department official was violently attacked after stopping a motorist allegedly driving recklessly at Eloff Ext, south of Johannesburg on Saturday night.
JMPD spokesperson, Xolani Fihla, said the officer was patrolling the highway when she saw that the driver was speeding and had ignored a red traffic light. The driver almost collided with the officer’s patrol vehicle.
Fihla said the officer swerved to the left avoiding the speeding vehicle which continued to drive at a high speed.
“A chase then ensued and the officer managed to stop the vehicle at the intersection of Baldwin Road and Eloff Ext, Village Deep. The driver of the Jetta then reversed his vehicle, almost bumping into the patrol vehicle again,” he said.
The officer alighted from her patrol vehicle, asked the driver to wait, and called for back-up.

“The man grabbed her from behind and choked her. He picked her up and threw her onto the ground and began kicking and swearing at her. He also shouted out racial slurs,” Fihla said.
An e-hailing driver and a female passenger stopped to assist the officer. Fihla said they shouted at the man and he continued to assault the woman. The e-hailing driver managed to stop the man and a Fidelity ADT security personnel stopped to assist and the motorist was arrested.
“The suspect was placed in the back of the patrol vehicle and got aggressive with officials. He said if they hadn’t come to help the officer, he was going to kill her,” Fihla said.
