Exactly a year ago, entrepreneur Themba Makamo opened his first VAYA store at the Newtown Junction Mall in Johannesburg.
He says this was an important milestone for their young brand.
“Not only for us but for the thousands and even millions of people who look like us. This proved that coming from eKasi doesn’t mean we must settle for less. That we are capable of greatness too. That excellence is not reserved for a few.”
Since opening the store, Vaya has seen people from all walks of life embrace the brand.
“The store has not only served those that wanted a pair. But it has become a cultural hub. We always joke, that with the Newtown store ‘you must expect the unexpected.’’ And it’s true. So far, a CNN documentary has been shot at the store, a movie, music videos, reality shows, podcasts, adverts…and more.”
He achieved all of this without any connections or paid brand ambassadors.
“We’d like to thank each and every one of you that made this dream possible. Whether by buying a pair, recommending us, liking and sharing our content, it has all contributed to our growth. As a result, today 12 people are permanently employed and we also opened a second store.”
Themba Makamo notes that their mission is to inspire people to Go For It by going for it themselves.
“In 2023 we are planning to have 10 stores opened while growing our employee count to 100 people. With God’s grace and your support, we believe that it’s all possible,” he said.
