In a moving post on social media, Louisa Zondo, the mother of the late South African rapper Riky Rick, openly expressed the deep void left by her late son.
Riky Rick tragically passed away by suicide in February 2022, leaving a mark on those who loved him.
Zondo shared a glimpse into her emotions, revealing that she was grappling with an overwhelming sense of longing for her son.
“Today is one of those days when I cannot shake off my deep longing for MaRiky. The beautiful conversations the @rikyrickfoundation for the Promotion of Artivism had today moved me to this state.”
For Zondo, music has often been a source of healing. She recounted how a particular song, We Will Find You by Oleta Adams and Brenda Russell, transported her back to the nostalgic landscape of 1994. In her heartfelt words, she addressed her son, saying, “I miss you so much, MaRiky.”
Louisa Zondo recently released a book, Dearest MaRiky, to honour her son’s life.
Speaking to DJ Sbu on the Hustler’s Corner about the process of writing the book, Zondo said her writing process began when she embarked on climbing up Mount Kilimanjaro. The moving support from the public following her son’s passing inspired her to write. “Maybe that is how I will serve,” Zondo told DJ Sbu.
She was able to complete the book with the help of her partner and her team. Most of the writing was done earlier this year.
