Springbok flyhalf, Elton Jantjies has spoken out about his affair and apparent drug abuse allegations, denying reports that he checked himself into rehab to sober up.
Speaking to News24, the rugby player who’s affair with a team dietician rocked his marriage, said he does not suffer from any mental health issues, and that he had never been to a rehab facility.
Jantjies says there are a number of false narratives being painted about his personal life and he chose to set the record straight once and for all.
“I noted that I was portrayed to be a drug addict with mental health issues. I can proudly say I have no mental health issues and was never in a rehab center for drug abuse.”
According to Jantjies, his time at the Harmony Clinic rehabilitation center in Cape Town in October was due to injuries he sustained during one of the Springboks’ games.
He was also in the facility to cope with his insomnia, as he was taking sleeping pills for “most of his life.”
Jantjies who will not be part of the Springboks training group for the national side’s European tour in November, has moved to Cyprus with his wife, Iva and three sons.
Desperate to clear his reputation after news of the alleged sordid scandal broke, Jantjies reportedly admitted to the affair with Bok dietician Zeenat Simjee.
This despite the both of them denying that they were having an affair when the story broke.
As quoted from News24, Jantjies admission included an apology to his wife and spoke about wanting to start over in their new home.
“This has not been an easy ride for me. I’ve had to take a really hard look at my life and the choices I made in the past. I know my actions have caused a great deal of pain to everyone, especially my wife who has always been by my side.
I have apologised to her and have made it my mission to make it up to her for as long as I live. I am working on clearing my name of the slander I have been experiencing lately.
I am deeply saddened that I was not cast to go and play with my team because of my injuries and because I did not get enough game time during the year.”
