Grammy-award-winning South African DJ and producer Black Coffee recently started gigging again following a serious travel accident in January 2024.
The incident, which occurred during a flight to Mar del Plata, left him with injuries.
In a recent social media post, Black Coffee, whose real name is Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo, opened up about the trauma of returning to work after the traumatic experience.
The 48-year-old shared that the trauma of getting on flights “remains,” however, the love of “serving music and spreading the love is much bigger.”
He continued, “I’m proud of what we’ve achieved this summer with the European tour and the residencies. It may sound cliché, but every show has been better than the last.”
Furthermore, Black Coffee thanked everyone who joined him last month on his tour.
Describing the moment of the accident on My Top 10 at 10 with Tbose Black Coffee said in part.
“The plane was cruising, and I was listening to a gospel album. I reclined my seat, took a nap, and then I woke up to the plane shaking violently. I opened my eyes, and everyone was trying to hold on,” he recalls the horrific incident.
“It was moving so violently that I fell on the floor. There was a gospel song playing on my headphones, repeating Hallelujah. It felt like I had these angels singing to save me at that moment. I was on the floor, got up, and sat on the chair, trying to hold on. The plane just dipped so fast, and I hit the ceiling with my head, and I was unconscious for a couple of seconds. Shortly after, I was on the floor again, and it was simmering down. The plane inside was so destroyed—still flying—the oxygen masks were rolling.”
