Swami Sivananda is the 127-year old virgin monk who credits his celibacy for his long and fulfilling life.
The practicing yogi, swears that his lifestyle, which includes no spicy foods, complete celibacy, and hours of yoga daily, is what has led to him being the oldest man on earth.
While this hasn’t been confirmed by the Guinness Book of World Records, Swami Sivananda believes he has outlived the previous record holder, Japan’s, Jiroemon Kimura who was 116 years and 54 days old before his death in 2013.
Last month, Kaya 959 covered the incredible story of Theresia Nyirakajumba, the 123-year old virgin who is still holding onto hope she will find her soulmate and fulfill her desire for intimacy.
Neither Theresia nor Swami’s age and longevity have been recorded by Guinness to date, but the religious leader from Varanasi, India, is now reportedly applying to the World Record Book to verify his claims.
Swami, which means Hindu male religious teacher, travels around the world to give lectures about his life, secret of peace and his apparent treasure – the knowledge of living a long life.
Born on 08 August 1896, Swami Sivananda grew up in an extremely poor family in Kolkata, India.
At his age, the monk is still able to care for himself, lives without any medical ailments or conditions, and doesn’t have the need for medical aid.
Swami Sivananda’s fountain of youth revealed
When questioned about the secret to his wisdom and a long life, Swami mentioned 4 of his profound practices which includes:
- Practicing desirelessness for attention-free living
- Dedicating his time and energy to the service of society, which gave him a sense of fulfillment
- Following a very disciplined lifestyle of early rising, yoga practice, and a very strict yogic diet
- The blessings of his spiritual master, Guru Krupa

127-year old monk credits his celibacy for his long life
Swami Sivananda said his lack of desire for sex has meant he’s lived a disease free, and long life.
He says with discipline, humans can control every aspect of their lives, including greed, sexual desires and the need for alcohol.
“Discipline is the most important thing in life. One can conquer anything with discipline, whether it’s food habits, exercise, sexual desires, or the need to achieve a luxurious life.
Because I was born in poverty, I have never had great demands in life. Control over your needs is the biggest gain in life. I have lived for so long because material things don’t make me happy.”
Swami Sivananda claims his celibacy is the secret to his long life
Swami doesn’t sleep on a mattress but sleeps on a hand woven jute straw mat, and instead of a soft pillow, rests his head on a stone brick.
The sage says people have become too obsessed with seeking love and fulfillment in another, and have become unhappy, unhealthy and consumed with a “quest to always have more.”
