After it was announced that Katlego Maboe would be making a return to the Expresso show, fans were excited to find out that one of the stars who made the show what it is today would be making a return following a 2-year break.
Viewers also looked forward to the tell-all interview between Katlego and Graeme Richards.
Here are 10 key moments from the sit-down that took place last week.
“The new me is not the old me“
“The new me is not the old me,” Katlego tells Graeme.
He notes that there are certain elements of his old self that remain.
“Throughout the things that have happened to me over the last couple of years, I think one thing I could never let go of is this desire that I have to be a force of positivity in people’s lives and have them smile and be a part of whatever it is that I am a part of.”
“I questioned my self-identity“
Given the nature of the situation he found himself in, Katlego questioned his self-identity.
“Who am I, what am I here for, and what am I good for, but I have worked my way through it with the help of friends and family and just the many people whom I’ve met in person and on social media.”
“I took a step back“
“All I could do for that moment was step back and look at the pieces of what lay around me and mourn it.
“It was a death sword but at some point, you can either sit and mourn for a long time or you make the decision that no matter what, I’ll find a reason to get up and put that one foot forward,” he says.
“The acceptance of imperfection definitely sticks out“
Despite always striving for perfection, Maboe made peace with the fact that he is imperfect
“Not that in any way, shape or form I had ever regarded myself as being perfect, but the pursuit of that perfection is elusive and perhaps unattainable,” he shares.
“I’m made of strong stuff“
It’s inside the furnace that you can truly know what you are made of.
“I look at my son who is four years old now. I imagine that life is going to throw all sorts of challenges his way and I’d like him to have that small voice inside that reminds him that he is made of strong stuff. It’s pulled me through some of the darkest times.”
“I thought the darkest thoughts“
“There was a moment when I thought the darkest thoughts. I think everyone goes through their own individual trial but wouldn’t it be better if it ended quickly and my family wouldn’t have to worry about having to call me every single day and deal with this?” Reflects the presenter.
He says his children are “the reason he kept going.”
“I decided to go home“
After locking himself into his apartment for days, Katlego decided to go and visit his mother.
“My mom and my aunt cooked one of those typical seven colours Sunday meals. I sat there looking at this plate, memories of how I grew up and the people that have poured all this love into my life to bring me to who I am just came flooding back and I cried over that plate.”
“I’ve had solid quality time with my son“
During those two years away from the spotlight, Maboe got to spend quality time with his son. He says” nothing can ever replace that.”
“Leaving my mark on the broadcasting scene“
The star would still like to make his mark on the South African broadcasting and music scene.
What he missed the most
Despite everything that’s been happening in his life, Katlego Maboe dearly missed starting his day on Expresso.
“No matter what was happening in my life I would always be able to walk through that door and know that they’d be a surge of welcome home,” he reflects. “I missed that kickstart engine to the day and we would walk out of here feeling like we could conquer the world.”
Well, that shouldn’t be a worry anymore as he’s now back on the show.
