Katlego Sekhu

Actress Matshepo Faith Sekgopi, best known for her role as Dimpho in The River, delivered a moving tribute to her late on-screen brother and colleague, Presley Chweneyagae, at his memorial service.
She began with a verse from 2 Corinthians chapter 4, anchoring her grief in scripture.
“I am still not okay,” she admitted, her voice trembling. “I still don’t understand why we are here. Why this occasion, why this day, why so young? I am touched and heartbroken.”
Matshepo reflected on the honour of working alongside one of South Africa’s most celebrated talents.
“My name is Matshepo Sekgopi, and I had the privilege of being chosen to be part of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create a body of art that had me working with Africa’s greatest talents, Presley Chweneyagae being one of them.”
She recalled how, at the time, she had no idea what the universe had in store when she was cast in The River.
“In hindsight, the universe was preparing me for something greater. Little did I know that the short time spent on the show would give me memories that would last a lifetime, an imprint never to be forgotten.”
What started as a typical working relationship quickly evolved into something deeper.
“There was something beyond what normal colleagues or professionals would experience. There was something that kept us bound, and later, would make us family.”
Matshepo spoke with admiration about Presley’s unmatched dedication to his craft and the bond they built behind the scenes.
“I spent many long days and nights with him. We shared meals, and one thing about him joy came in the morning. He would wake up and choose to be happy.”
In Presley, she found not only a co-star, but a teacher, a protector, and a brother. His laughter, his professionalism, and his presence brought light even to the most difficult days on set.
