After nearly three decades on air, SABC2 and Word of Mouth Productions have confirmed that Muvhango will officially come to an end, with its final episode airing on 8 August 2025 at 21h00.
Rooted in Tshivenda culture and proudly vernacular when it wasn’t yet trendy to be, Muvhango broke ground as one of the first dramas to spotlight a language often overlooked in mainstream South African media.
At a time when isiZulu, isiXhosa and Sesotho dominated the TV landscape, Muvhango came through and changed the narrative.
“Muvhango gave an opportunity to an ignored language that has become one of the most celebrated in South Africa,” said creator and executive producer Duma Ndlovu.
“It has been a privilege to create television moments where marginalised languages were at the centre.”
For almost 30 years, Muvhango has been a staple on SABC2 offering drama, family dynamics, royal politics and cultural education all in one.
Lala Tuku, Acting Group Executive for Video Entertainment at the SABC, paid tribute to its impact:
“More than just a drama, Muvhango has been the champion of language, culture, identity and national pride. As the TV landscape evolves, SABC2 is preparing to usher in a new era of storytelling — one that builds on this legacy.”
A look back at some unforgettable Muvhango moments:
- Mashudu Mukwevho’s death in the arms of his Sowetan wife Catherine — while his traditional wife Vho-Masindi waited back home in Venda.
- The timeless triangle: Thandaza, Edward and Doobsie.
- Azwindini’s royal polygamy with Susan, Pfuluwani, Vele and Mpho.
- The rivalry for the throne between Azwindini and Mulalo.
- Thandaza and Ranthumeng’s wedding — still one for the books.
- Teboho’s “shoot-to-kill” moment that shook the nation.
- And of course, KK’s unforgettable fashion, furniture, and flair.
