KwaZulu-Natal police are on the hunt for a brazen gang that stole R200-million worth of drugs from the Hawks Serious Organised Crime offices in Port Shepstone.
Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Nomthandazo Mbambo says the robbery took place between Friday last week and Monday.
“The suspects gained entry into the building by forcing open the windows. One of the safes in the office, which were used to store exhibits, was tampered with,” says Mbambo.
She adds that the gang stole 541kg of cocaine drugs and ransacked the office where safes were kept.
National Head of the DPCI, Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya, has appointed Deputy National Head, Lieutenant General Tebello Constance Mosikili, to conduct an Inquiry into the circumstances of the theft.
Officials from the Detective and Forensic Service have also been requested to investigate the matter.
Mbambo adds that a case of business burglary has been opened.
“No suspects have been arrested in the matter,” she says.
