Johanna Makgalemela , sister to Basetsana Kumalo, has recounted her recent traumatic ordeal in Spain. The horror began at a Spanish airport.
“My backpack, on top of my trolley, was stolen in less than a minute” she explained that this had happened while she was weighing her luggage.
This sudden, swift robbery she shared plunged her into a “chaotic travel thriller.”
Left without a passport, phone, or money, Johanna was stranded. The ensuing days were a blur of crisis management: cancelling cards, recovering data, and replacing her phone.
The real challenge, however, was travel. She had to secure a new flight (assisted by the TWF) to the South African embassy in Madrid to obtain an emergency passport—as onward travel without ID was impossible.
Johanna described the terrifying reality of being stranded “penniless, with no lifeline,” a situation that gave her raw insight into the struggles of other travellers in similar predicaments.

She also shared that after securing a new passport and Schengen visa back in Johannesburg, she promptly returned to Europe to continue her travel engagements.
Johanna expressed profound gratitude to the friends and strangers whose kindness “carried me through” the nightmare.
