Despite efforts to tackle the country’s hijacking rate and implement strategies at specific hotspots, the latest hijacking data shows a steady rise in attacks.
With the country easing lockdown restrictions, all provinces except the Eastern Cape and the Free State have reported an increase in hijackings. The Free State’s numbers from last year remain the same, with the Eastern Cape being the only province to see a drop in the crime.
Most hijackings took place in Gauteng, with KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape following.
Sedans and hatchbacks remain the most sought-after vehicles targetted, and most hijackings occur in townships and secondly residential areas.
