The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has tallied votes in at least 94 municipalities across the country. Early results show a massive spike in votes in favour of ActionSA, especially in townships in Gauteng.
The IEC reported that 55% of the 64 502 results expected have been finalised.
“The Northern Cape has completed 89% of its results, followed by Western Cape at 72% and in third position comes Eastern Cape at 70%. The rest of the provinces’ completion rate range between 37% and 67%,” the commission says.
At the level of capturing, 78% of results are already in the system waiting for scanning and auditing.
“The number of completed municipalities now stands at 94. We will spare no effort to ensure that the majority of the 163 municipalities are completed within the planned time,” the IEC says.
IOL reports that special votes cast at some voting stations in Waverly, were not counted as the IEC believes that the boxes were tampered with.
ANC support in township dwindles?
The latest from the polls show that Herman Mashaba‘s ActionSA has garnered a lot of the ANC’s votes in some areas of Gauteng.
Analysts say data is showing that the ruling party’s support in townships has dwindled.
“At this stage, it looks as if it could settle at 55% down from 70% which is dramatic. It is a massive shift. And it’s the ActionSA impact,” says News24 elections analyst Dawie Scholtz.
Forecasting reports show the party has gained ground in Soweto and surrounding townships. Mashaba formed the party following his exit from the DA,
Scholtz adds that the differential between suburban voter turnout and township voter turnout remains large, with a larger chunk of people voting in the former than people going to vote in the latter.
“This will make a difference when the final tallies are calculated,” he says.
