Award-winning actor John Kani is leading by example. The 77-year-old just got his second jab of the Pfizer vaccine.
Kani says he is committed to doing all he can to stay safe during the pandemic.
“Done my second Pfizer jab… One small jab on my arm and I am part of the effort to save my people. Now I am going to continue to comply with COVID-19 restrictions- social distancing, wearing my mask and washing my hands regularly. Elder,” he tweeted.

Kunene and the King
Kani’s latest play, ‘Kunene and the King’, continues to receive praise. His role in the play earned him the prestigious Pragnell Shakespeare Birthday Award in April 2021.
The play is set in post-apartheid South Africa. Kani portrays the role of Lunga Kunene alongside Antony Sher (Jack Morris).
“Besides his age, Jack has seemingly little in common with his at-home nurse Lunga Kunene, but the two men soon discover their shared passion for Shakespeare, which ignites this ‘rich, raw and shattering head-to-head,” The Times wrote about the play.
According to the Royal Shakespeare Company, ‘Kunene and the King’ “premiered in the Swan Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon in 2019, before transferring to the Ambassadors Theatre in London”.
The play, which Kani wrote, has since been released as a book.
“I’m hoping to open another premiere of the my latest play here in SA at the Market Theatre and I want to take it to the Playhouse in Durban and the Mandela Bay Theatre Complex in Port Elizabeth. I want to go to Braamfontein. I want to go to Mbombela at Innibos fees,” he recently told the Sunday Times.
