Twitter users have slammed EFF leader Julius Malema over tweets denouncing the deployment of the army in two provinces ravaged by ongoing looting and riots.
For at least three days, people were seen entering shops and businesses in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal where they looted.
Some shops and premises were then set alight. There were also videos circulating on social media, showing damage to cars at dealerships.
In a tweet, Malema said; “No soldiers on our streets! Otherwise, we are joining. All fighters must be ready…they won’t kill us all. We need a political solution to a political problem, not soldiers. #NoToSoldiers”.”

In another tweet, Malema said: “Some of you are even calling for a state of emergency. Be careful of what you’re asking for. As usual they’re going to kill the innocent. In honour of Collins Khoza and all citizens who were harassed during level 5, say #NoToSoldiers.”

Firm response needed
COPE national spokesperson, Dennis Bloem, said the violent situation in both provinces called for urgent intervention.
“It is very clear that the police are doing their best but they are outnumbered in some areas by these looters.
It is the responsibility of the Government to safeguard life and property of its citizens. President Ramaphosa cannot look on when hooligans are running amok,” Bloem said.
The DA’s John Steenhuisen said the unfolding crisis required an urgent and firm response from the government.
“It is critical that government and law enforcement get ahead of this curve, and that President Ramaphosa takes immediate steps to quell the violence and looting,” he said.
Many criticised Malema’s stance.
One day when the nerves are calm, as South Africans, we going to have to come together and be HONEST about this #JuliusMalema clown!
