South Africa’s COVID-19 infections continue to climb at an alarming rate.
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) says the country has recorded 21,584 new cases.
South Africa has now recorded a total of 1,995,556 laboratory-confirmed cases.
“This increase represents a 28.4% positivity rate. A further 382 COVID-19 related deaths have been reported, bringing total fatalities to 61,029 to date,” the NICD said in a statement.

Gauteng continues to rise
The NICD says Gauteng accounts for the majority of new cases (59%), followed by the Western Cape (11%) and North West (7%) provinces.
Gauteng recorded 12,806 new cases on Thursday, July 1.
South Africa is currently on a level 4 lockdown due to the rising cases. The country’s vaccine programme continues to move full steam ahead.
