Empire star Taraji P. Henson has confirmed that the spin-off show which was on the cards, has been put on hold.
The actress’s new company TPH Entertainment was set to handle production of the series which was to be co-written by ‘Empire’ co-creator Danny Strong, Yolanda Lawrence and Stacy A. Littlejohn.
Taraji was looking forward to reprising the role of Cookie Lyon but has said the spin-off is on hold for now.
The spin-off was supposed to air last year but Taraji wasn’t happy with aspects of the production and would rather wait for the script to be perfect.
“For me, the script has to be right. It has to be worthy of the audience. We have to give the audience something incredible, and sometimes, I think you need time, time away.”
Fans are eager for the spin-off to the hit music business drama that brought Taraji to South Africa for press around Empire in 2019.
According to Hollywood Reporter, the spin-off was supposed to follow Cookie’s move to LA.
Empire ended earlier than expected in 2020 but its run was shorter than planned due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the spin-off was supposed to give the writers a chance to conclude the show properly.
Taraji doesn’t seem to be too phased about postponing production to the spin-off series and her focus at the moment is on her hair product range TPH.
She’s also going to be hosting the BET Awards and is excited to be making an ‘entrance’.
