South African Music Awards (SAMA) multi-award-winning singer and songwriter Zahara could find herself in prison following her failure to appear in the specialised commercial crimes court several times.
The musician has been found guilty of contempt of court in a case brought against her by the South African Revenue Service (SARS) for failure to pay her taxes.
She was served with a R1 500 fine or three months’ imprisonment.
Reports from TimesLIVE have revealed that the troubled star, whose birthname is Bulelwa Mkutukana, handed herself over to police on Monday 7 June in accordance with the execution of her warrant of arrest that was issued in April.
Zahara’s money troubles date back some 10 years ago when she claimed she was owed millions of rands by her former record label, TS Records following the huge success of her debut album, Loliwe. In 2011 Zahara revealed that she would be taking legal action against DJ Sbu and TK Nciza, the former co-owners of TS Records.
In turn, TS Records issued a cease-and-desist letter to the musician to stop her from making “defamatory comments” against the company.
Zahara is back in court on June 25 for the SARS tax return case.
