Limpopo’s Shekinah Lion and Game Lodge in Vaalwater has received international recognition after being named South Africa’s Best Luxury Lodge at the 2026 World Luxury Hotel Awards.
The accolade was announced at the awards ceremony held at the Siam Kempinski Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand, on 24 October 2026. The awards recognise excellence in luxury hospitality, with winners selected through votes from guests, travellers and industry professionals.
The recognition is a significant achievement for the Limpopo-based establishment and places the province’s tourism offering on an international stage. It also highlights the potential of luxury tourism to attract visitors, support local businesses and create economic opportunities.
Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba welcomed the award, describing it as an important achievement for the province’s tourism industry.
She said the recognition demonstrates how investment in quality tourism experiences could showcase Limpopo’s natural attractions, wildlife and hospitality while contributing to economic growth and job creation.
“Tourism establishments such as Shekinah could help strengthen Limpopo’s appeal to international visitors while supporting local economic development,” she said.
Tourism remains an important contributor to Limpopo’s economy, alongside sectors such as mining and agriculture.
Increased visitor interest in the Northern province can benefit accommodation providers, restaurants, local businesses, tourism operators and suppliers, while supporting employment opportunities across the province.

A hospitality experience shaped by personal touches
For Shekinah Lion and Game Lodge’s Marketing and Communications Manager, Eleh Mathobo, the recognition reflects the dedication and hard work of the lodge’s owners, management and staff.
Mathobo said the establishment’s approach to hospitality is centered on creating a home-away-from-home experience, with personalised service beginning as soon as guests arrive.
Wildlife encounters are another distinctive feature of the property. Shekinah Lion and Game Lodge highlights sightings of African lions, white lions, white tigers and orange tigers among its attractions.
Combining these wildlife experiences with luxury accommodation and a relaxed setting, the lodge offers visitors a distinctive way to experience the Waterberg.

A reminder of South Africa’s beauty
The international recognition comes at a time when South Africa continues to navigate economic challenges, including high unemployment, particularly among young people.
With tourism supporting businesses and livelihoods across the country, accolades such as this highlight the potential of the hospitality sector to contribute to local economic development.
They also serve as a reminder of the country’s natural beauty and the experiences it has to offer, as the tourism industry continues to rebuild and strengthen following the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
An extraordinary escape into the wild
For travellers seeking something beyond the traditional lodge experience, Shekinah Lion and Game Lodge offers a luxurious retreat in the heart of Limpopo.
Situated in Vaalwater, the lodge combines luxury accommodation, wildlife viewing, bushveld activities, dining and personalised hospitality in an intimate setting.
From waking up to the sights and sounds of the bush to spending evenings around the fire, a stay offers visitors an opportunity to experience the Waterberg at a slower pace, surrounded by nature, comfort and the distinctive beauty of the wild.
