- Three suspected cash-in-transit robbers were fatally shot during a police shootout on the Mabopane Highway in Pretoria.
- Police say the suspects opened fire after officers attempted to stop their vehicle following an intelligence tip-off about a planned robbery.
- A fourth suspect was arrested and found in possession of a 9mm pistol.
Three suspected cash-in-transit robbers were fatally shot during a police shootout on the Mabopane Highway (R80) in Pretoria on Monday, 28 September 2026.
The shootout came after law enforcement officers received intelligence information about suspects allegedly planning to commit a robbery.
A multidisciplinary team comprising the SAPS Tactical Response Team, Anti-Gang Unit, Gauteng Traffic Airwing and private security companies, through Business Against Crime South Africa, responded to the tip-off.
Gauteng police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwisays the team spotted a white Hyundai H1 on the R80 and attempted to stop the vehicle.
“The team spotted a white Hyundai H1 on the R80 highway and attempted to stop the vehicle using blue lights. The occupants allegedly opened fire on the police, who responded, resulting in three suspects being fatally wounded,” said Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi.
Nevhuhulwi says another suspect, who is believed to have been working with the same group, was travelling in a Toyota Avanza and was arrested.
The suspect was allegedly found in possession of a 9mm pistol.
The recovered firearms will be subjected to ballistic testing to establish whether they can be linked to other crimes.
Police investigations into the case are continuing.
