Anonymous is caught between her initial desire to offer unconditional support to her unemployed sister and the deep sense of betrayal she feels after discovering her sister has secretly been receiving a R5,000 monthly allowance from their brother while living cost free.
Having stretched her own finances to fully cover her sister’s living expenses under the assumption that she was destitute, Anonymous feels exploited and hurt by her sister’s lack of honesty and initiative to contribute.
Her core dilemma is deciding whether to confront her sister and demand financial contributions, or whether she must internalise the burden because she took her sister in without setting explicit boundaries from the start.
Uncle T, late last year, my younger sister lost her job. It was a contract position, so when it ended, she didn’t receive much financially. She wanted to move back to our hometown, but I worried that going back home without a job would leave her feeling stuck and hopeless. So, I invited her to move in with me instead. From the day she arrived, I made sure she never felt like a burden. I continued paying the rent, covered the electricity, bought all the groceries, toiletries, and household essentials, and whenever I bought things for my kids, I always included her too.
I never asked her for a cent because I genuinely believed she had no income. A few days ago, my mother casually mentioned that our brother has actually been sending my sister R5,000 every month since she moved in with me. I was stunned. What I find disturbing isn’t that she’s receiving money. In fact, I’m grateful our brother has been looking out for her; what I’m disturbed by is that she never declared it. I’ve been stretching my own salary every month, making sacrifices so she wouldn’t feel embarrassed or like a burden.
Meanwhile, she’s been receiving R5k every month and never once said, “Sisi, here is some money for electricity this month,” or even, “Please stop buying my personal items-I can take care of those.” I wasn’t expecting her to pay rent or carry the household. I just feel like she let me believe she had absolutely nothing when that wasn’t the case.
Now I don’t know if I’m overreacting or if my feelings are valid. Should I confront her about this and ask her to start contributing now that I know the truth? Or is it all on me, because I opened my home without setting any conditions? Do I have no right to expect how she spends her stipend? Who’s wrong here?
