- Four people have died in a multi-vehicle crash on the N4 Toll Road near Mbombela.
- Police say the collision involved a truck and two minibuses, with one vehicle catching fire after impact.
- An investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.
Four people have been killed in a horrific accident on the N4 Toll Road near Rivulets towards Mbombela on Thursday, 23 July 2026.
The crash reportedly occurred when a truck collided with the rear of a minibus that was towing a trailer and travelling ahead of it.
According to authorities, the truck driver allegedly lost control, swerved into the oncoming lane and collided with another minibus taxi travelling from the direction of Mbombela.
Three of the deceased were occupants of the minibus taxi travelling towards the truck. The vehicle caught fire following the impact.
Moeti Mmusi, spokesperson for the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, said it is not yet clear which vehicle the fourth victim was travelling in.
“The fourth victim was found on the road. It is suspected that he may have been flung out of one of the involved vehicles during the impact. No further injuries have been reported at this stage,” he said.
The truck was travelling from Johannesburg towards Mbombela.
An investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
