Children bring joy into our lives, but they can also leave parents with unexpected bills for unexpected repairs.
On Feel Good , Andy Maqondwana asked members of the Kaya 959 family a question: “What is the most expensive mistake your child has ever cost you?”
The responses ranged from broken electronics to damaged vehicles, with many parents admitting that they still haven’t recovered from the financial impact.
Four TVs destroyed in one incident
One caller shared that an incident involving her five-year-old son resulted in her paying for four television sets.
She explained that her son was blamed after the TVs at his crèche were damaged while the children were playing.
A tablet didn’t survive the frustration
Another parent said shared how a tablet they bought for their child was mainly used for watching cartoons on YouTube.
However, when it stopped working as expected, the frustrated child hit the tablet against a wall and cracked the screen.
The same child also recently broke a pair of brand-new earphones.
When a teenager gets behind the wheel
One of the most costly stories by far involved a 15-year-old who attempted to move a car.
Unfortunately, the vehicle crashed into a wall, resulting in a damaged car and property.
The parent joked that while the experience was very stressful at the time, as both the car and the wall had to be repaired, the child is now a responsible 23-year-old.
Reflecting on the conversation, Andy reminded parents that many of these incidents were honest mistakes rather than intentional mischief.
However, they still came with expensive price tags that parents will probably never forget.
