South African comedian and actor Sabelo Gumede has announced that he has completed his chemotherapy treatment.
Gumede shared a video on social media showing himself ringing the bell at his oncologist’s office, which marks the end of his treatment.
Cancer battle revealed in 2025
The actor, who was diagnosed with stage 3 choriocarcinoma in early 2025, recently revealed that he had undergone his final chemotherapy session on 21 May.
In September 2025, Gumede launched a GoFundMe campaign after opening up about his diagnosis. At the time, he explained that the rare but chemotherapy-responsive cancer had spread through his lymph nodes to his neck, abdomen, lungs, spine, and diaphragm.
A message of gratitude after treatment
In the emotional clip, Gumede addressed the medical team who supported him throughout his treatment, expressing gratitude for the care and encouragement he received.
“I normally have a mouthful of stuff. I’m a complete chatterbox, but over the last week I’ve just had one thing on my mind. I even asked my friend, ‘Is there such a thing as being over grateful?’ Because every other day for the last week I’ve been realising just how many people helped me on my journey,” he said.
“I’m calling people, messaging people. I probably messaged you guys the other day. I just feel very grateful, so thanks,” he added.
In the caption accompanying the video, Gumede reflected on the challenges of the past year and admitted that the journey was frightening.
“I can’t believe we finally made it. Deep down inside, I knew this had to be the outcome, but imagine if the other thing was the outcome? Scary, right!?
“Yerrrr, life would have sucked without me,” he joked.
