Alleged political fixer Brown Mogotsi will remain in custody after the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court denied his bail application.
The North West businessman appeared briefly before the court on Thursday, 4 June 2026, where the court found that he had failed to provide a verifiable residential address.
The court further expressed concerns that he may not stand trial if released on bail.
As a result, his application for bail was dismissed and he remains behind bars pending further legal proceedings.
Mogotsi is facing charges including unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, defeating the ends of justice and perjury.
The charges stem from allegations that he was involved in orchestrating a shooting incident in Vosloorus last year, shortly before he was due to appear before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which is investigating allegations of criminality and corruption within parts of the criminal justice system.
The State has also alleged that the firearm linked to the shooting forms part of ongoing investigations into other serious criminal matters.
Madlanga Commission Spotlight
Mogotsi’s name has featured prominently during proceedings at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
Evidence presented before the commission has included allegations that he facilitated meetings between various political figures and individuals allegedly linked to organised crime. These claims remain the subject of testimony and have not been tested or proven in a court of law.
He has also been mentioned in testimony relating to alleged interactions involving suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.
Mogotsi has previously made a number of allegations regarding Matlala and other public figures. Those claims form part of broader matters currently being examined by the commission.
The case against Mogotsi and the commission’s investigations remain ongoing.
