Forensic Pathologist, board member of the South African Academy of Forensic Sciences, and senior lecturer at the University of Pretoria, Dr Thabi Soul, recently joined Drive 959 with Glen to explain everything one needs to know about the post-mortem certificate.
This followed a recent conversation on the show where a listener asked about the steps required to obtain a post-mortem certificate.
Dr Soul explained that a post-mortem report, issued after a medical, legal, or forensic autopsy, is sent to the magistrate, court, or prosecutor via the investigating officer from the SAPS.
“So, family members or any other concerned party can access that report once it has been supplied to the court,” she said.
On death certificates, Dr Soul clarified that they are issued by the Department of Home Affairs after a death has been formally notified by the pathologist or the attending clinician.
