- Five Home Affairs officials have been fired for fraud and sexual assault.
- Their dismissal brings the total number of officials removed for corruption in July to 38.
- Minister Leon Schreiber warned that the department will no longer tolerate corruption or abuse.
The Department of Home Affairs has dismissed five officials with immediate effect for serious offences, including fraud and sexual misconduct.
This latest action brings the total number of officials fired from the department in July for corruption-related offences to 38.
Of these, eight have already been convicted and sentenced to prison terms ranging from 4 to 18 years, while criminal proceedings against 19 others are still underway.
Home Affairs Minister Dr. Leon Schreiber said the decisive action forms part of a broader crackdown on corruption within the department.
In just 12 months, we have already rid Home Affairs of 38 crooked and delinquent officials. I repeat my warning to anyone involved in corruption: the days of defrauding this Department or committing acts of sexual harassment or abuse while relying on long, drawn-out disciplinary processes are over.
The latest dismissals follow the recent bust of a passport syndicate in Durban last month.
