Patriotic Alliance leader Gayton McKenzie has suspended Kenny Kunene from the party, pending an investigation into his recent visit to the home of businessman Katiso Molefe, a suspect in the murder of DJ Sumbody.
In a live broadcast on Tuesday, McKenzie announced that he would also write to the Johannesburg Council to inform them of his intention to remove Kunene from his position as the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Transport, allowing the investigation to proceed without interference.
“Kenny Kunene will be investigated, and I’m going to tell you who is going to investigate him, lawyers of good character,” McKenzie said. “
While he is being investigated, I am going to remove him as MMC. I will write to the council. I’m also going to ask him to step back from politics for one month until the investigation is concluded. This is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. It’s difficult to act against Kunene.”
McKenzie, who also serves as the Minister of Arts and culture, took to his X profile to further address the matter, stating that while he believes Kunene 100 percent, he understands that the public might not. For that reason, he said a full investigation would be conducted to validate what they already know internally.
