On Sunday, Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi held a media briefing where he made startling claims of widespread corruption and interference within the South African Police Service (SAPS), allegedly reaching the highest levels, including Police Minister Senzo Mchunu.
Mkhwanazi accused Minister Mchunu of being in constant communication with individuals involved in criminal activities and of orchestrating the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team.
This team, initially formed to investigate political murders in KZN, had reportedly uncovered links between drug cartels, politicians, police, and prosecutors, particularly in Gauteng.
Mkhwanazi alleged that 121 case dockets were removed from the task team to shield politically connected members of a criminal syndicate from prosecution.
He also presented alleged WhatsApp messages linking Minister Mchunu to an accused businessman who had received lucrative South African Police Service (SAPS) tenders.
Point of View with Phemelo Motene unpacked these shocking allegations and their national implications with Crime Expert and Research Associate Calvin Rafadi, Crime Analyst Dr Chris De Kock, and South African Police Union Spokesperson Lesiba Thobakgale.
