In a last-minute change that sent ripples through the Springbok camp, coach Rassie Erasmus was forced to alter his team on Friday following the withdrawal of captain Siya Kolisi.
The good news, however, is that Kolisi’s absence is reportedly due to a minor injury with high hopes that he’ll be fit for the test season kicking off in July.
As a result of Kolisi’s withdrawal, Jesse Kriel will step up to captain the Springboks for Saturday’s match against the Barbarians at Cape Town’s DHL Stadium.
This will be a momentous occasion for Kriel, who makes his captaincy debut after earning 79 Test caps since his Springbok debut in 2015.
In the forward pack, Marco van Staden has been drafted directly into the starting lineup to replace Kolisi.
Late change to the #Springboks team as Siya Kolisi is ruled out, with Jesse Kriel taking the captaincy against the @Barbarian_FC in Cape Town tomorrow 🤝#ForeverGreenForeverGold
