Both are facing charges of premeditated murder and human trafficking of Kutlwano, a 2-year-old baby.
Kutlwano was reported missing by his mother last year in November, and she was subsequently arrested in connection with her son’s disappearance.
During the investigation, it was discovered that she had received R75 000 on the day her child vanished. Further police investigation in May linked her to Khounyana, leading to his arrest.
Khounyana led the police to the location where Kutlwano was buried in Bekkersdal.
On Wednesday, Khounyana informed the court that he would not be pursuing bail. The court subsequently denied the mother’s release on bail.
The case has been postponed to 6 August 2025.
