South Africa is mourning the passing of one of its most revered musical figures, legendary trumpeter Fezile “Feya” Faku.
The Eastern Cape Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC) confirmed the news, expressing profound sadness at the loss of a true “son of the soil.”
According to a statement released by his family, Faku died peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday night while on tour in Switzerland.
The family has requested privacy as they navigate this difficult time.
Andile Duna, spokesperson for the DSRAC, released a statement Tuesday praising Faku’s immense contribution.
“His artistry transcended borders, and his commitment to mentoring young talent made him a pillar of inspiration in our communities,” Duna said.
Duna further described Faku as “more than just a musician – he was a national treasure and global ambassador for South African jazz.”
Born in New Brighton, Gqeberha, Faku’s music was deeply rooted in the spirit of the nation.
“His music carried the soul of our people and reflected the spirit of resilience, healing, and unity.
“The Eastern Cape, renowned for nurturing artistic and liberation struggle giants, has lost a voice that resonated with “authenticity, integrity, and pride,” Duna emphasised.
Tributes have poured in on social media.

South African Trumpet/Flugelhorn player was a gentle giant of African Jazz music. He was also a forerunner in Swiss/South African jazz music collaborations, glad I got to watch him live at Moods Club in Zurich '23 after many years of listening to his music pic.twitter.com/rdRcyYk4z6
