The high-profile fraud and corruption case against former ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe and his six co-accused has been postponed to 17 June 2025, following a brief appearance at the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court.
Mabe, who previously served on the ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) and as an MP, has notably secured the services of prominent attorney Zola Majavu, who will now represent Mabe, his wife Mmatlheko, and two co-accused companies. Majavu confirmed in court that he would be requesting further particulars from the state.
Another co-accused also terminated their attorney’s mandate, further contributing to the delay as formal withdrawal procedures had to be accommodated. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed it was ready to proceed but had to grant the defence teams time to prepare.
The charges against Mabe and his co-accused relate to an allegedly irregular R27 million tender awarded in 2017 to Mabe’s company, Enviro Mobi, by the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Ekurhuleni Metro. The tender was intended to supply over 200 three-wheeler waste picker vehicles.
However, the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) claims that only four of the 196 promised vehicles were delivered, many of which were faulty, leading to a loss of public funds exceeding R25 million. The SIU also found that Enviro Mobi received over R25 million in advance, despite rules against upfront payments, and that Mabe did not disclose his connection to the company while serving as an MP.
All seven accused remain out on R30 000 bail each.
