South African media icon and philanthropist Basetsana Kumalo recently honoured her sister, Johanna Makgalemele, with a heartfelt birthday message.
In a beautifully written tribute, Kumalo celebrated the life and spirit of her sibling, calling her a “force of nature” and a woman who has “challenged the status quo” since birth.
“Oh my mother’s child, my father’s daughter, when you were born on this day, our family was blessed to welcome a force of nature, a bold, brave and beautiful daughter,” Kumalo began. “One who would challenge the status quo and write her own story.”
Kumalo didn’t hold back in expressing just how much Johanna means to her, not just as a sister, but as a lifelong supporter and friend.
She praised Johanna’s loyalty and protective spirit, sharing that her sister has often been her fiercest defender “both literally and figuratively.”
“I’m in awe of your brilliance and magnanimity,” she wrote. “Your loyalty, love for family and devotion to your children is beautiful to witness.”
The former Miss South Africa and beloved TV personality also highlighted Johanna’s radiant personality and infectious energy.
“Your energy illuminates rooms, your love for life is so infectious, your joie de vivre is delightful to witness,” she said, thanking her sister for being the glue that binds the family and for always bringing joy, including teaching her a few dance moves along the way.
The former Miss SA also added a biblical blessing:
“May the Lord grant you the desires of your heart, may the Lord bless you and keep you, may He make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you… and give you peace.”
Ending the message with the affectionate Afrikaans expression ,“I love you stukkend, my Ma Se Kind.”
