The Department of Transport and Human Settlements has urged motorists to avoid the N2 route between Kokstad and Port Shepstone in KwaZulu-Natal due to heavy snowfall in the area.
Department spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya confirmed that the route has been completely closed, with traffic officials and other authorities working to clear the snow and redirect traffic.
“To save lives, we have taken the decision to fully close the road between Kokstad and Pietermaritzburg, as well as the R603 route from Tacoma to Reit,” said Sibiya. “Our message to motorists and snow chasers is simple: prevention is better than cure.”
He stressed the severity of the situation, noting that trucks are already stuck along parts of the route, causing major congestion.
“We urge all motorists and members of the public to avoid travelling to Kokstad and surrounding areas. Please delay your trips for now,” he added.
The province is currently under three Level 6 orange warnings for disruptive snow, torrential rain, and gale-force winds, particularly affecting the southern parts of KwaZulu-Natal.
“We are in continuous communication with the South African Weather Service to ensure that our response is guided by reliable and up-to-date information,” Sibiya concluded.
