The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning of possible snowfall across most parts of the country this weekend, with the exception of Limpopo.
A strong cold front is expected to hit South Africa, gripping several provinces, including Gauteng.
The cold conditions are expected to persist until next Friday, with a significant impact on the weather in the Eastern regions.
“In the coming days, a particularly intense cut-off low system associated with extreme and intense winter weather is expected to affect South Africa, persisting over the country until at least the middle of next week over the Eastern provinces,” SAWS said in an official statement.
Gauteng, which has experienced light snowfalls in the past, may see another dusting on Monday, 9 June, possibly extending into Tuesday, 10 June.
In addition, thousands of runners gearing up for the Comrades Marathon on Saturday have been advised to brace themselves for chilly conditions.
“Moreover, there will be a risk of showers or thunderstorms developing over the Drakensberg, spreading to the coast in the evening,” SAWS added.
Small stock farmers are urged to implement appropriate measures to prevent stock losses due to exposure to extremely cold conditions.
