The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has released the key dates for Tax Season 2025, which officially opens on July 21st. The tax authority is also significantly expanding its auto-assessment process, aiming to streamline filing for a larger segment of taxpayers.
Key Filing Dates
- Auto-Assessments: Notifications will begin rolling out from July 7th to July 20th, 2025. Taxpayers identified for auto-assessment will receive an SMS or email from SARS.
- Individual (Non-Provisional) Taxpayers: The filing window is from July 21st to October 20th, 2025.
- Provisional Taxpayers & Trusts: These entities have a longer filing period, from July 21st, 2025, to January 19th, 2026.
Auto-Assessments: What You Need to Know
SARS is leveraging third-party data from employers, medical aids, and pension funds to pre-populate tax returns for many non-provisional and provisional taxpayers with straightforward financial affairs.
If you receive an auto-assessment:
- No action needed if satisfied: If you agree with the SARS calculation, you don’t need to do anything further.
- Dispute or amend: If you believe information is missing or inaccurate, you must submit a revised return via eFiling by October 20th, 2025.
- Refunds: If a refund is due, SARS aims to process it within 72 business hours.
- Payments due: If you owe SARS, payment details will be provided for settlement via banks, eFiling, or the MobiApp.
Important Reminders for All Taxpayers
- Prepare early: SARS urges taxpayers to gather all necessary documentation well in advance to avoid last-minute delays and ensure accurate submissions.
- Banking details: Ensure your banking details on eFiling are correct and updated to facilitate swift refunds. Crucially, your security contact details (email and cell number) must also be current to enable bank detail changes.
- Filing exemption: Taxpayers earning less than R500,000 annually may be exempt from filing if they meet specific criteria (more information on these requirements is available on the SARS website).
