The recreational drug, which Proteas fast bowler Kagiso Rabada admitted to have tested positive for early this month, has been revealed as benzoylecgonine (BZE), a metabolite of cocaine, according to Rapport.
Speaking to the publication, the CEO of the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (Saids), Khalid Galant, said Rabada was one of 16 cricketers tested during the SA20 in January 2025.
Rabada reportedly declined the option of having his B sample tested.
“He was smart to go down that route. If you know you did it, it saves you time and legal fees,” said Galant.
This comes after Rabada recently confirmed his one-month suspension from cricket following a failed drug test.
The 29-year-old released a public statement expressing his remorse over the incident and revealed the real reason for his return to South Africa from the Indian Premier League in early April.
“I am deeply sorry to all those that I have let down. I will never take the privilege of playing cricket for granted. This privilege is much larger than me. It goes beyond my personal aspirations,” Rabada said in the statement.
“Moving forward, this moment will not define me. I will keep doing what I have always done — continuously working hard and playing with passion and devotion to my craft,” he added.
