Zimbabwean-born South African singer-songwriter Berita Soul has proudly shared the news of her graduation, describing it as the “best decision I ever made… to look ahead.”
She celebrated the milestone with gratitude; fans filled her comments section with congratulatory messages.
In 2023, Berita spoke to Kaya 959 about feeling “displaced publicly” following abuse she experienced on social media from an ex-partner.
Berita revealed that after a long conversation with her therapist, she realised she had been in a narcissistic relationship.
“The day I found out I was in an abusive relationship, I quickly made plans. I remember I had bought continental pillows, and I started packing my things. I told him I was taking them back,” she shared.
“That moment, I booked myself into a hotel room and left as if I was coming back. I later told him I was going to the studio and I never returned.”
Berita cited 20 December 2021 as the turning point. While driving home from a performance with her then-husband, they were stopped by police for a routine licence check. “It escalated from that to a full-blown argument where he started shouting at the police,” she recalled.
She said she had to physically restrain him, and it was in that moment she realised: “This is never going to be my life.” It wasn’t until after their wedding that she started noticing the signs of abuse.
Her parents, based in Zimbabwe, were deeply concerned for her safety.
“He was harassing me and everyone else around me. I even had to leave the country for six months. My dad didn’t want me to return to Johannesburg. I told him I had never experienced that type of rage in my life.”
