Serena Williams has joined the ownership group of the basketball team Toronto Tempo.
The Women’s National Basketball Association’s (WNBA) Toronto Tempo revealed on Monday that tennis star has increased her ownership share in the team, furthering her commitment to women’s sports.
The WNBA’s first expansion franchise in Canada, the Tempo, is owned by Kilmer Sports Ventures chairman Larry Tanenbaum and is scheduled to compete in 2026. Williams’ stake size has not been made public.
Williams, the former No. 1 tennis player with 23 Grand Slam singles titles, recently appeared in rapper Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl performance. She has been busy expanding her off-court portfolio since she announced her retirement from sports in August 2022.
She also owns a minority stake in the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League, the Los Angeles Golf Club of TGL, and Angel City FC of the National Women’s Soccer League.
Williams will actively participate in the Toronto Tempo’s visual identity, from jersey designs to merchandise partnerships, as part of her job with the team.
“I have always said that women’s sports are an incredible investment opportunity. I am excited to partner with Larry and all of Canada in creating this new WNBA franchise and legacy,” Williams said in a statement.
